TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH FORUM – WASHINGTON CHAPTER

MARCHLUNCHEON

 DATE:

Wednesday, March 22, 2017

TOPIC:

Feasibility of Private High Speed Rail in Texas

Speaker:

Baruch Feigenbaum
Assistant Director of Transportation Policy
Reason Foundation

Texas Central, a privately held company, has announced that they plan to build a high-speed rail line between Dallas and Houston. There are many differences between corridors in which high speed rail is successful such as Tokyo-Osaka, Paris-Lyon, and Boston-Washington compared to the Dallas-Houston corridor. What role do density, local transit networks, and conventional rail play? How many passengers would a train in Texas carry and how much would it cost to build? Finally, what role does the private sector play in reducing costs or creating innovation?

Baruch Feigenbaum has a diverse background researching and implementing transportation issues including revenue and finance, public-private partnerships, highways, transit, high-speed rail, ports, intelligent transportation systems, land use, and local policymaking. He is a member of the Transportation Research Board Bus Transit Systems and Intelligent Transportation Systems Committees. He is Program Vice President of the TRF Washington Chapter, a reviewer for the Journal of the American Planning Association (JAPA) and a contributor to Planetizen. He has appeared on NBC Nightly News and CNBC. His work has been featured in the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal. Reason Foundation a non-profit think tank advancing free minds and free markets. Prior to joining Reason, Feigenbaum handled transportation issues on Capitol Hill for Representative Lynn Westmoreland. He earned his Master’s degree in Transportation from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
